Before we jump into the FAQ, here are some thoughts about how the data can best work for you

  • How we prefer not to see the data used and why

There are a lot of "bad guys" on the Internet and of course we want to keep them off our sites. The simplest method for doing this is to simply deny them access from addresses that have a very low trust level. StopForumSpam provides this data but it's not a definitive list providing an absolute score of the reputation of any IP or email address. How you use the data is entirely up to you but please consider the following situations should you decide to block access to your site from IP addresses recorded here

  • Not all IP addresses are equal

A lot of countries have Internet providers perform carrier grade NAT on their limited IP ranges. By completely blocking all access to a single IP you could be blocking 1, 200 or even 2000 users. We see this a lot from Russia and Poland to name a few. There is really no way to know just how many users your block will impact.

More and more countries have creeping levels of authoritarian Internet controls (e.g. China, Saudi, South Africa, Singapore) where people utilise VPN connections to bypass Government controlled proxy servers to access information that is censored or where simply accessing it comes with a serious risk of death (e.g. Bangladesh, Pakistan). Blocking these people from your site could be denying them important knowledge or even access to a service that they’ve paid for.

People move. Mobile data connections and dynamic IP addresses are common. Blocking an IP address based on a single listing that is 10 months old isn’t a great idea.

Sure there are a lot of servers in datacenters posting onto forums and there really is no reason why any but a tiny fraction of these servers should be posting on your site. There are no mandated "do's" and "don’ts" for how you control access to your site but please consider us when implementing a system on your site that uses StopForumSpam data. We are small, we have limited resources and we operate completely on the good will of the community, we simply don’t have the resources of Twitter. If you operate a popular website accessed from around the world then blocking people based entirely on a single IP listing has a snowball effect on us, especially when you send them our way. We spend a huge amount of precious time addressing confused, angry and abusive people.

We do have one golden rule, one that we take very seriously; Do not use the API as a software firewall. If you query the API whenever you serve a page then you will very quickly find your IP address thrown into the firewall. There is a reason for this. If Google spiders your site, you start performing a denial of service attack querying if Google is a listed spammer. If Google spiders your site and 10,000 others all doing the same then you launch a distributed denial of service attack against us.

  • What you should think about using the data for

If someone is committing data to your site, such as registering a new account, posting a comment or message or doing anything that could result in your site displaying their annoying spam, then you should look at trying to prevent that. We are all familiar with the dreaded Captcha challenge where we are asked to decipher what seems like some ancient hieroglyphic but even with the more intelligent and friendly system there is still methods used to bypassing them, like completing it. This is where we come in useful (in our opinion anyway)

What we can provide is a secondary check based on the users IP and email addresses (and to a lesser extent their username). We can give you the number of times that they’ve been reported to us and how long ago it was since we last saw activity that is believed to be spam. We can also provide a reputation score based on this data, like a “there is this percentage chance that if you let them post then they’ll do something bad”

Some people choose to deny access to new comments, post or user signups based on a single listing of any age and while some use scores and other methods to prevent the chance of blocking a legitimate user. We don’t block anyone from anything, we just provide you with the information and you use it anyway that you like. Should you do an outright block then please do consider the impact that it has on us, as details in the section above.

We provide the data but please consider the best way in which you use it.

  • What data can I submit?

The database records a log of actual incidents of spam content arriving on live forums and blogs. It does not record suspicious or unwanted activity of any other kind. It is not a ban list or black list as such.

Spam submission must be triggered by a human who makes the decision to report each incident using some judgment. If it was a decision that could be made automatically by software there would be no need for this database.

Spam content is broadly defined as content that is intended to promote a product or a cause, and which is clearly unsuitable for the forum on which it is posted.

Most forums have a registration agreement which specifically excludes spam. Please ensure that your forum registration agreement is clear about this to avoid disputes about whether a post is legitimately regarded as spam.

Some common forms of spam include:

    • A promotional/commercial but irrelevant web link in a profile signature or elsewhere in a profile.
    • A post discussing the merits of a product or service, typically with one or more web links (which may or may not be easy for a human reader to spot)
    • A post containing just one or more web links
    • A post consisting of gibberish text apparently on some kind of theme, with links buried in it
    • A post advertising a (frequently illegal or semi-legal) service containing contact mobile phone numbers or a post box address.
    • A post by someone apparently responding to a question requesting product suggestions (from an accomplice) with a link to something they 'found'. (These are harder to spot unless you know what you're looking for).

Spammers will think of other forms, which are submittable if they meet the broad definition above. Not all posts that meet any of the above definitions need be regarded as spam. Some judgment is required.

Common forms of non-spam (that can't be submitted) include:

    • Suspicious registrations - even those already listed in the database
    • Hacking attempts
    • Posts that are merely offensive

    * None of these are sufficient because they do not contain spam material.

The content of spam posts should be submitted as evidence where practicable, but this is not required.

A spam report without evidence that is challenged by the reported spammer is more likely to be removed than one with evidence.

    A spam submission here needs:

    • the registration user name
    • the IP address
    • the email address
    • preferably spam content as evidence.

    Note

    • The IP must be the actual IP used to contact the forum or blog. If your forum is behind a reverse proxy such as Cloudflare, you'll need to find the origin IP to submit. If a visit comes from a web proxy or other service, you report the web proxy IP, not the IP address that it may claim it is forwarding for.
    • If you're using a recommended forum plugin with a 'submit to stopforumspam' button, it should be taking care of this for you.
    • The email address needs to have been verified, by sending it information that is required to complete the registration. This is to ensure that the email address is actually under the control of the spammer, and hasn't just been quoted from some public mention of it. Most forums can do email verification of this kind, though it is not always enabled by default. If yours doesn't, then you MAY NOT submit data here.

Spammers occasionally use different IPs for registration and spam posting. You can report either or both as convenient. To report both, you will need to make the same submission twice specifying different IPs. Include evidence only with the submission for the actual post. This is only relevant if you're doing manual submission via the webform on this site, or building a forum plugin.

Here you will find a brief overview of what StopForumSpam is about and how we can help you. If you cannot find the information you require, please check out our forums.

  • What do we do?

We provide free access to our database of known forum and blog spammers. The database provides their email addresses, IP addresses, usernames, spamming frequency, and, in some cases, evidence of their spam.

  • How can I see this information?

We provide this information throughout the site, including the home page and the daily pages, If you want to find something specific, then you can use the search page. Here you can search by email / IP addresses and usernames. The search page will show you how often someone is listed and over what period of time, plus a lot more. It's a good gauge to determine whether someone is a spammer.

In addition, we provide an API that enables the automated searching of our database. The API allows for forum and blog software (along with countless other systems) to check the database in a way that is easy for them to process.

  • I'm listed on your site but Im not a spammer

Firstly, its not an accusation of anything. A lot of the information that is listed is gathered from "honeypots" setup to trap spammers. Being listed on the site doesnt mean you have been sending spam. The IP address that you have, mightve been inherited from someone that spammed, someone may have just used your email address or even that you have downloaded a virus or trojan. If you use the removal page and be polite, then we can figure out what has happened and get it fixed.

  • What do we do?

We provide free access to our database of known forum and blog spammers. The database provides their email addresses, IP addresses, usernames, spamming frequency, and, in some cases, evidence of their spam.

  • How can I tell if someone is a spammer?

You can search for someone by username, email address or IP. Some telltale signs are ridiculous, gibberish and unreadable usernames, or broken language posts, or links to other sites, either in messages or in user profiles. Some spammers will copy/paste random messages in a thread and post a link there as well. Some will even quote posts, reply with another post and insert a tiny link into the quoted text. Others may not even post, but may just use your site to link to other sites. It is really difficult to offer a 100% "sure-fire" method of identifying all spammers. That's why we provide a search page and a forum in which people discuss their experiences and how to spot spammers.

  • I run a network. Can you notify me if we get listed?

Sure, send us an email through the contact page, and we can discuss this.

  • Can I help?

Yes, you can. In fact, this site would not be as popular and accurate as it is if it weren't for the assistance of its members and users.

  • How can I help?

You can submit any users that have spammed your forum or blog through the Submit a Spammer page. You will need a key in order to do this -- that's how we keep track of what's going on. In order to obtain your own key, please join our forums and check out this page to start.

  • How much does it cost?

Nothing at all -- that is a promise. However, if you find our services helpful, feel that it saves your sanity, or you would just like to see us stay open, we won't turn you away if you would like to donate toward our costs. If you have a small VPS on offer, we can set up a mirror as well. We do this for the love of it, unpaid, but we have costs to cover, the biggy being the costs of the servers that the website is hosted on. Please consider helping out, as we can't afford to run the site without financial support.

  • How can you support me?

We will try to support people as much as possible, but we are few and have limited spare time outside our real lives and day jobs, but please feel free to ask about this in the forums. Remember the golden rule: Be nice and you might be surprised at the response you get.

  • I'm going to sue you for listing me!

Firstly, we didn't list you and we aren't liable for any details listed. We are one of the good guys. Secondly, you cant libel an email address, an alias, a domain name or an IP address, they aren't actual beings. Further more, what accusations have been made in the general wider public? Any lawyer that says otherwise is after your money. For more information, see our legal section in the footer of our site.

  • Who has helped you?

We extend a big thank-you to Snel Server, who now host the server. We welcome their generous offer, support and technical expertise that they provide.

  • ¿Qué soporte me ofrecéis?

Was muss ich tun?
